Optical Engineer

As a member of the Engineering Hardware staff, the Optical Engineer works within a design team to drive development of new products, with an emphasis on opto-mechanical design. The Optical Engineer must have experience with ray trace analysis software, Zemax or Trace-pro design tools to deliver creative design solutions. Experience transitioning designs to production a plus. The engineer must have extensive understanding of applied optical design and simulation using Zemax tools, and previous experience designing and verifying optical systems to specifications, both in simulations and in the laboratory. The optical engineer is responsible for all aspects of optical design, implementation and maintenance for new camera systems.

Key Responsibilities

  • * Performs optical analysis in the following disciplines; lens design, collimation optics, polarizers.
  • * Designs an optical system in a compact, thermal monostatic design.
  • * Works extensively in the optics lab to conduct combined electrical and optical experiments, supporting the development of new technologies and optics systems.
  • * Supports development of optical tags and a wide variety of user applications, space-craft, ground robots, maritime, UAV, UGV, including the development of risk mitigation experiments as desired by customers.
  • * Participate in all phases of optical development life cycle for the project.
  • * Must be able to work in the electro-optics lab.
  • * Must be able to use optical equipment to make accurate measurements and advise any changes upgrades needed to do so.



  • * B.S. in Optics or Physics with an emphasis in optical system design and packaging.
  • * 3-5 years experience.
  • * Solid people skills and the ability to communicate well in written, spoken, and presentation forms.
  • * The ability to work independently or in a group environment.
  • * Ability to obtain U.S. secret clearance.
